A STEM is one of the two main structural axes of a vascular plant, the other being the ROOT. The stem is normally divided in to nodes and inter-nodes.

NODES hold one or more leaves, as well  as buds which can grow  in to branches ( with leaves ,conifer cones, or inflorescence ( flowers )). Adventitious roots may also produced from the nodes.

Functions of STEM

  • The stem keeps the plants upright.
  • The stem bears branches , leaves, flowers and fruits. Leaves are arranged in such a way that they are exposed to plenty of sunlight.
  • The stem transports water ,minerals and food to all parts of the plant.
